HOSTILES synopsis – In 1892, legendary Army Capt. Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief (Wes Studi) and his family back to their tribal land. Embarking on a harrowing and perilous journey from Fort Berringer, N.M., to the grasslands of Montana, they soon encounter a young widow (Rosamund Pike) whose family was killed on the plains. The travelers band together to survive a punishing landscape that's crawling with hostile Comanches and vicious outliers. Along their journey, the vicious Indian hater, Blocker, and his sworn Cheyenne enemy find a bridge to reconciliation.
Curator’s statement: This film is the most perceptive, heart-felt cinematic journey that reveals the terrible loss on all sides – resulting from the theft of this country from the indigenous people. In my humble opinion, it was the best film of last year – and the least appreciated – which may be a testament to our continuing inability to face the issues this film raises. The acting is superb, cinematography is breathtaking and the score is exquisite.
