Can Entrepreneurship ’Save’ Classical Music?

Over the last decade, a perfect storm of sorts has exerted increasing pressure on performing arts organizations, especially those in classical music. Changing demographics, new business models, and reduced public funding have all contributed to a crisis mentality — especially among the largest of performing arts organizations: symphony orchestras and opera companies. CU Professor of Music Jeffrey Nytch shares some thoughts on these challenges in his new book, “The Entrepreneurial Muse: Inspiring Your Career in Classical Music,” newly released from Oxford University Press. Dr. Nytch will demonstrate how entrepreneurship can give us the tools to take a new approach to building audiences and relevance for classical music in the 21st century.

Jeffrey Nytch enjoys a diverse career as a composer, educator, author, and consultant. His compositions have been performed throughout the U.S. and Europe by a long list of distinguished artists and ensembles, and his tenure as Executive Director of Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble (“PNME”) saw the group growing its audience by 500% while tripling its budget. Since joining the faculty of TheUniversity of Colorado-Boulder as Director of the Entrepreneurship Center for Music (in 2009), he has expanded the curriculum, launched a weekly professional development workshop series, and partnered with the Leeds School of Business to create an 18-credit Certificate in Music Entrepreneurship. Nytch is in wide demand as a speaker and scholar, having delivered papers at a range of musical, entrepreneurial, and scientific conferences. He is also a frequent guest clinician at schools and conservatories nationwide. He uses principles of entrepreneurship to inform his strategic planning consulting for small arts organizations, and is also in demand as a consultant to institutions launching programs in arts entrepreneurship education. His book, “The Entrepreneurial Muse: Inspiring Your Career in Classical Music” is being released by Oxford University Press in March, 2018.
